Benchmarking the Birmingham Foundation Academy Programme

Birmingham Foundation Academy, part of the University of Birmingham, commissioned UK NARIC to provide a benchmarking analysis of their recently launched Birmingham Foundation Academy programme to determine the programme’s comparability in the context of the UK, Australian, Canadian and US education systems, in order to facilitate wider recognition and understanding internationally.

The BFA programme is a foundation programme designed to prepare international students for undergraduate admission in the UK. The programme combines modules in English language and study skills with subject-specific modules related to the students’ chosen undergraduate specialisation.

During the study, similarities were found between the breadth of content, progression routes and modes of learning in the BFA programme and the selected international qualifications. Minor differences emerged in the programmes’ structure and specialisation of content, which were largely attributed to each qualification’s educational context. A qualitative review and comparative analysis of the BFA programme against UK NARIC’s established evaluation criteria found the following comparable levels:

QualificationComparability
Birmingham Foundation Academy programme Is broadly comparable to the overall GCE A level standard
Is broadly comparable to the overall Australian Senior Secondary School Certificate standard
Is broadly comparable to the overall Canadian Senior Secondary School Certificate standard
Is broadly comparable to the overall United States Advanced Placement standard

These conclusions are based on the overall comparability of the academic level of the BFA programme to the educational level of these qualifications rather than direct equivalence to a specific programme, or subject-for-subject equivalence.

Further information on the BFA programme can be found on their website.
